The Freikorps
After WW I a large number of soldiers went on to from small groups aka "volunteer units" these units were know as the Freikorps for ( free corps ) the units consisted of a few as 100 men to divisional strength. Their purpose was to defend local areas. The larger Freikorps Groups even had infantry, artillery, motorized units including machine guns and air power. It is thought that as many as 200 - 300 units existed. Freikorp units served to combat communist revolution in all of Germany. They served in the Baltic and fought the Poles along the eastern frontier providing border incursion defenses.
