Swimming Award 1925 ( Non Portable )
Non ferrous highly gilded swimming award. The dimensions are ( ≈ 6.5 cm X ≈ 5.0 cm ). Awarded in 1930 The front has a high relief Neptune and a Mermaid holding a wreath with 1925 and the letters VSP in a clover shape. The reverse has hand penned details of the event and the winners name. This type of gilding was used in the early 1900's through to early war. A mixture of mercury and gold were fired on with the result being this distinct "honey gold" appearance which held up much better then gold wash. One reason they discontinued this process was because the materials used were needed for the war and the process itself produced highly toxic gases. ( Please correct me if this is in err ). Outstanding gilded swimming award with a most interesting appearance. Excellent
